When There’s No Built-In Wardrobe

Many New Zealand rentals and older homes have limited built-in storage, so freestanding furniture can be a practical option. A wardrobe, chest of drawers or other movable storage can add useful capacity without becoming part of the building itself. However, freestanding does not automatically mean no wall fixing is required — check the individual product’s installation and anti-tip instructions before use.

Making the Most of a Small Bedroom

In a smaller bedroom, the goal is to get as much off the floor as possible. Tall, narrow storage — a wardrobe with a smaller footprint, a stacked drawer tower, a bedside table with a drawer or shelf — keeps floor area clear and the room feeling open. Under-bed storage is often underused: drawers built into the bed frame, or storage boxes designed for the space beneath, can hold an entire season’s worth of clothing or spare bedding without using any additional floor space.

The Calm Bedroom: Storage as a Design Choice

In a well-organised bedroom, storage can become part of the room’s overall design. A wardrobe in a finish that works with the bed frame can feel intentional, while bedside tables with drawers help contain smaller items. A blanket box at the foot of the bed can provide additional storage for bedding or other items where the room allows. Check the product’s intended use before treating any storage item as seating.
